Travel insurance protects you against financial losses that happen during a trip — medical emergencies abroad, flight cancellations, lost luggage, a stolen passport, or an accident. Costs abroad are often 10–50x higher than in India. A single hospitalisation in the USA or Europe without insurance can cost ₹50L or more. Travel insurance typically costs ₹600–1,500 for a week and is one of the highest-return purchases a traveller can make.
Medical Cover
Maximum amount paid for hospital treatment abroad. USD 5,00,000 = approx ₹4.2Cr — the standard minimum for international travel.
Trip Cancellation
Refunds your pre-paid trip costs (flights, hotels) if you have to cancel for covered reasons — illness, family emergency, natural disaster.
Baggage Loss
Compensation if the airline loses or permanently damages your checked-in bags. Separate from baggage delay.
Emergency Evacuation
If you need to be airlifted or medically evacuated to a proper hospital, this covers the cost. Can run into ₹10–30L in remote locations.
Flight Delay Cover
If your flight is delayed beyond the trigger threshold (6–12 hrs depending on plan), you receive compensation for meals, accommodation, and inconvenience.
Personal Liability
If you accidentally injure someone or damage property abroad, this covers legal costs and compensation up to a set limit.

Plain-Language Summary What makes this plan stand out — or fall short
Only plan with no upper age limit — the single viable option for travellers above 75.
Adventure sports included at no extra cost. Pay-per-day pricing for uncertain trip lengths.
Best value at the USD 5L cover tier. Policy issued in under 5 minutes.
Cheapest overall, but lower cover and a 12-hour delay trigger you may never reach on a short trip.
Fully digital claims with fast turnaround. Strong app-based support while abroad.
Covers pre-existing conditions in life-threatening emergencies — rare in travel cover. Worth it if you have a condition.
Among the lowest premiums at full USD 5L cover. Strong emergency cash assistance.
Direct global cashless hospital tie-ups — you avoid paying upfront abroad in most cases.
SBI-backed with wide branch support if you need help arranging a claim from India.
High parent-company ICR (95.56%) suggests a genuinely policyholder-favourable claims culture.
Lowest premium here, but USD 3L cover and a 12-hour delay trigger are meaningful compromises.
Modular cover — pay only for the sections you actually need on this trip.
Cheapest in this set, but no multi-trip option, no baggage delay cover, and a high parent claim-rejection rate (25% by value).
Large medical servicing network, but parent-company ICR of 67% sits below the healthy range.
Zurich global assistance network — genuinely useful for medical coordination in remote destinations.

Which Travel Insurance Plan Should You Choose?
Travelling with parents / senior family → Tata AIG (only no-age-limit option)
Adventure trip (trekking, scuba, skiing) → HDFC ERGO (adventure included by default)
Bajaj Allianz: 12-hour delay — on a short trip, you may never qualify.
Compensation typically covers meals, accommodation, and a fixed daily allowance.
On a 3-day trip, a 12-hour trigger is almost meaningless — your trip is effectively over.
If flight punctuality matters to you, choose a 6-hour trigger plan.
Adventure Sports Cover: Always Verify Before You Climb or Dive
Standard travel policies exclude injuries from most adventure activities. What counts as "adventure" varies by insurer:
HDFC ERGO includes: trekking, scuba diving, skiing, bungee jumping — by default, no extra cost.
Tata AIG, ICICI Lombard, Bajaj Allianz: Available as an add-on — buy it separately before your trip.
Activities typically excluded even with add-ons: professional sports, racing, mountaineering above 6,500m.
If you get injured trekking without the add-on, the entire claim will be rejected.
Book the adventure add-on before you leave. It costs ₹100–300 extra and is worth every rupee.
Senior Travellers: Tata AIG Is the Only Viable Option Here
Most travel insurers cap coverage at age 70 or 75. For older travellers or multi-generational family trips:
Tata AIG Travel Guard Plus: No upper age limit — the only option in this comparison for travellers above 70.
ICICI Lombard covers up to 75 years.
HDFC ERGO and Bajaj Allianz cap at 70 years.
Premiums for senior travellers are significantly higher — budget accordingly.
Pre-existing conditions become more important to disclose as age increases.
For any traveller above 70, Tata AIG is the only option in this comparison.
Check Your Credit Card Before Buying
You may already have complimentary travel insurance — without knowing it:
Premium credit cards (HDFC Infinia, Amex Platinum, Axis Magnus, SBI Elite) include international travel cover.
Coverage typically ranges from USD 3,00,000 to USD 5,00,000 for medical.
But: credit card cover often excludes pre-existing conditions, has higher deductibles, and may require you to book the trip on that card.
Check your card's Most Important Terms & Conditions (MITC) document.
If card cover is sufficient and you're healthy, you may not need to buy separately.
Read your card's T&C first — you may already be covered.
What Travel Insurance Does NOT Cover — The Exclusions List
Being clear on what is excluded prevents claim shock:
Visa rejection: Trip cancellation due to visa denial is NOT covered unless specifically stated.
Change of mind: Cancelling because you no longer want to go is never covered.
Pre-existing conditions: Medical claims arising from your existing health conditions — unless you declared them and they were accepted.
Unattended baggage: Bags left unattended in a public place are typically excluded from theft claims.
Adventure activities: Without the specific add-on.
Alcohol/drug-related incidents: Any incident while intoxicated is excluded by all insurers.
Read the exclusions list — it is as important as the inclusions.
⚠️ Important: Travel insurance must be purchased before your departure date — not on the day of travel or after landing. Most policies require purchase at least 24 hours before departure. Claims for incidents occurring before the policy start date will be rejected.
Claim Rejection in India — The Statistics
Indian insurers registered 2,57,790 grievances on IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal in FY 2024-25, a 20% increase in a single year. Health and general insurance complaints rose almost 45%. About 69% of general insurance grievances concerned claims — delays, underpayments and rejections — amounting to roughly 1.22 lakh claim-related complaints.
The Council for Insurance Ombudsmen recorded 13,308 complaints against a single insurer in FY 2023-24, of which 10,196 related specifically to partial or complete claim rejection. A useful benchmark when comparing insurers: fewer than 20 complaints per 10,000 claims is considered healthy.

How to Avoid Getting Your Claim Rejected
Disclose every medical condition honestly. Non-disclosure is the single largest cause of claim rejection in India. Insurers review hospital records, pharmacy history and past claims at claim time. If unsure whether something counts, declare it — a higher premium costs far less than a rejected claim.
Never let an agent fill your proposal form. Agents are paid on the sale, not on your claim. If they mark "no" against medical history to push the policy through, you carry the consequence.
Read the Customer Information Sheet. IRDAI requires a plain-language CIS with every policy covering inclusions, exclusions, waiting periods, deductibles and grievance procedure.
Know your waiting periods. Pre-existing conditions typically carry 2–4 year waiting periods; specific illnesses and maternity have separate timelines.
Notify the insurer in time. Planned hospitalisation generally requires 48–72 hours prior intimation; emergencies within 24 hours of admission.
Confirm the hospital is in-network before admission. Cashless treatment only works at network hospitals and lists change.
Keep every document. Bills, prescriptions, diagnostic reports, discharge summaries and receipts. Missing documentation is the most common cause of partial settlement.
Renew without a break. A lapsed policy resets waiting periods and forfeits accumulated no-claim benefits.
How to Challenge a Rejected Insurance Claim
A rejection is not final. The escalation process below is free and frequently succeeds.
Step 1 — Obtain the rejection in writing with specific reasons
Insurers must cite the specific policy clause relied upon. A vague "not payable as per policy terms" is insufficient — write back demanding the exact clause number and the factual or medical basis.
Step 2 — File with the insurer's Grievance Redressal Officer
Every insurer must have a GRO with contact details published on the IRDAI website. Submit a written complaint with your policy copy, rejection letter and supporting documents. The insurer has 30 days to respond. File by email to preserve a timestamped trail.
Step 3 — Escalate to IRDAI through Bima Bharosa
If there is no response within 30 days or the response is unsatisfactory, register at bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in. IRDAI monitors insurer turnaround times through this system. Helpline: 155255 or 1800-4254-732.
Step 4 — Approach the Insurance Ombudsman (free and binding)
The Insurance Ombudsman is a quasi-judicial body under the Insurance Ombudsman Rules 2017, with 17 offices across India. Key facts:
Completely free — no fee, no court stamp, and no lawyer required. Advocates are not permitted to file on your behalf.
Covers disputes up to ₹50 lakh including expenses.
Decision within 3 months of complete documentation; many routine health cases close in 6–8 weeks.
The award is binding on the insurer once accepted, with compliance required within 30 days.
Must be filed within 1 year of the insurer's final rejection.
Documents required: complete policy copy; policies from the previous 48 months if rejected on pre-existing disease grounds; the repudiation or partial-settlement letter; your representation to the insurer; and all correspondence with the insurer and TPA. Find your jurisdiction at cioins.co.in.
Step 5 — Consumer Commission
For claims above ₹50 lakh, or if you reject the Ombudsman's award, the District, State or National Consumer Commission is the next forum depending on the amount. Using the Ombudsman route does not forfeit this right.
The Ombudsman cannot accept cases involving alleged fraud or criminal misconduct, complaints against agents rather than insurers, or claims where the insurer has not first been given 30 days to respond.
Claim Rejection Support Service — Coming Soon
We are building a service to help policyholders whose claims have been denied: reviewing the rejection letter against the policy wording, assessing whether the insurer's stated grounds actually hold, and helping assemble and file the Ombudsman complaint correctly. Consistent with the rest of this site, we take no commission from insurers and will never be paid by the company that rejected you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion mean in insurance?
Most travel plans will not cover claims arising from conditions you already had before the trip — diabetes, asthma, heart conditions etc.
What does Cashless Claim Abroad mean in insurance?
In a global cashless network hospital, you don't pay upfront — the insurer handles the bill directly with the hospital overseas.
What does Trip Interruption mean in insurance?
Different from cancellation — covers costs if you have to cut your trip short and return home early due to a covered emergency.
What does Deductible / Excess mean in insurance?
Amount you must pay before the insurer kicks in. A $100 deductible means the first $100 of any medical bill is yours.
Medical Cover Is the Only Reason That Truly Matters?
Everything else in travel insurance is a convenience benefit. Medical cover is the one that can save you from financial ruin: USA: Average hospital stay costs USD 10,000–30,000+ per day. A week in ICU can cost USD 1,00,000+. Europe (non-EU): EUR 5,000–15,000 for a routine hospitalisation. Southeast Asia: Cheaper, but still ₹2–5L for anything serious without insurance.
Flight Delay Trigger: The Detail Most People Miss?
Flight delay cover sounds great until you read the trigger threshold: Tata AIG, HDFC ERGO, ICICI Lombard: 6-hour delay triggers compensation. Bajaj Allianz: 12-hour delay — on a short trip, you may never qualify. Compensation typically covers meals, accommodation, and a fixed daily allowance.
Adventure Sports Cover: Always Verify Before You Climb or Dive?
Standard travel policies exclude injuries from most adventure activities. What counts as "adventure" varies by insurer: HDFC ERGO includes: trekking, scuba diving, skiing, bungee jumping — by default, no extra cost. Tata AIG, ICICI Lombard, Bajaj Allianz: Available as an add-on — buy it separately before your trip. Activities typically excluded even with add-ons: professional sports, racing, mountaineering above 6,500m.
