What is Term Life Insurance?

Term insurance pays a large lump sum (called the death benefit) to your family if you pass away during the policy period. That is all it does — and that simplicity is why it is so affordable. A ₹1 crore cover for a 25-year-old costs as little as ₹10,000 per year (less than ₹28 per day). It has no investment component, no maturity benefit — just pure, high-value financial protection for the people who depend on you.

Sum Assured / Cover
The amount paid to your family if you die during the policy term. ₹1Cr means your family receives ₹1 crore.
Policy Term
How many years the policy stays active. A 30-year term for a 25-year-old covers you until age 55.
Death Benefit
The payout your nominees receive. Can be a lump sum, a monthly income, or a combination of both.
Riders
Add-on benefits you can attach to your base policy — e.g. critical illness cover, accidental death cover, premium waiver.
Premium Waiver
If you become permanently disabled and cannot work, future premiums are waived — the policy stays active without any payment.
Return of Premium (ROP)
A variant where all premiums are returned to you if you survive the policy term. Sounds appealing but costs 2-3x more.

Key Terms Explained

CSR (Claim Settlement Ratio)
% of death claims paid. 99.62% = 99.62 out of every 100 death claims were paid. For term insurance, this is the #1 metric to check.
ASR (Amount Settlement Ratio)
% of total claim value paid out. Differs from CSR — LIC's CSR is 98.35% but ASR is 83%, meaning high-value claims may not be fully settled.
Complaint Ratio
Number of complaints per 10,000 claims. Lower = better customer experience. HDFC Life has the lowest: 1.33/10,000.
Solvency Ratio
Measures insurer's financial health. IRDAI minimum is 1.5x. Higher = more financially secure. Bajaj Life leads at 4.37x.
Non-disclosure
Hiding a medical condition when applying. This is the #1 reason term insurance claims are rejected — even years after buying.
Nominee
The person(s) who receive the death benefit. Can be updated anytime. Keeping nominees updated is critical.

What to Look For — Buyer's Advisory

CSR and ASR Together Tell the Full Story

Most people only check CSR. But the Amount Settlement Ratio (ASR) is equally important for large covers:

High CSR + High ASR = genuinely reliable insurer.

LIC vs Private Insurers: The Premium Gap Is Hard to Justify

LIC's Jeevan Amar is ₹14,200/year. ICICI Prudential's iProtect Smart Plus is ₹10,800/year for identical ₹1Cr cover.

If you need ₹1Cr cover, private insurers offer better value at lower cost.

How Much Cover Do You Actually Need?

The most common mistake is underinsuring. Use this simple calculation:

Most people in India are underinsured by 3–5x their actual need.

Return of Premium: Sounds Good, Rarely Makes Sense

ROP plans return all premiums if you outlive the policy. But the math rarely works in your favour:

Skip ROP. Buy regular term. Invest the difference.

Critical Illness Rider: Worth Adding for Most People

A CI rider pays a lump sum when you are diagnosed with a major illness (cancer, heart attack, stroke) — whether or not you die. This matters because:

CI rider is especially important if you have family history of major illness.

Full Disclosure Is Non-Negotiable

Non-disclosure of medical history is the #1 reason term insurance claims are rejected — often years after the policy was issued.

Disclose everything. Every time. No exceptions.

⚠️ IRDAI FY 2024-25 industry data: Life insurers paid ₹48,512 crore in death claims in FY2023-24. The leading private insurers (HDFC Life, Axis Max, ICICI Prudential) posted CSRs of 99.5–99.75%. Non-disclosure of medical history remains the leading cause of claim rejection in India.

Claim Rejection in India — The Statistics

Indian insurers registered 2,57,790 grievances on IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal in FY 2024-25, a 20% increase in a single year. Health and general insurance complaints rose almost 45%. About 69% of general insurance grievances concerned claims — delays, underpayments and rejections — amounting to roughly 1.22 lakh claim-related complaints.

The Council for Insurance Ombudsmen recorded 13,308 complaints against a single insurer in FY 2023-24, of which 10,196 related specifically to partial or complete claim rejection. A useful benchmark when comparing insurers: fewer than 20 complaints per 10,000 claims is considered healthy.

How to Avoid Getting Your Claim Rejected

  1. Disclose every medical condition honestly. Non-disclosure is the single largest cause of claim rejection in India. Insurers review hospital records, pharmacy history and past claims at claim time. If unsure whether something counts, declare it — a higher premium costs far less than a rejected claim.
  2. Never let an agent fill your proposal form. Agents are paid on the sale, not on your claim. If they mark "no" against medical history to push the policy through, you carry the consequence.
  3. Read the Customer Information Sheet. IRDAI requires a plain-language CIS with every policy covering inclusions, exclusions, waiting periods, deductibles and grievance procedure.
  4. Know your waiting periods. Pre-existing conditions typically carry 2–4 year waiting periods; specific illnesses and maternity have separate timelines.
  5. Notify the insurer in time. Planned hospitalisation generally requires 48–72 hours prior intimation; emergencies within 24 hours of admission.
  6. Confirm the hospital is in-network before admission. Cashless treatment only works at network hospitals and lists change.
  7. Keep every document. Bills, prescriptions, diagnostic reports, discharge summaries and receipts. Missing documentation is the most common cause of partial settlement.
  8. Renew without a break. A lapsed policy resets waiting periods and forfeits accumulated no-claim benefits.

How to Challenge a Rejected Insurance Claim

A rejection is not final. The escalation process below is free and frequently succeeds.

Step 1 — Obtain the rejection in writing with specific reasons

Insurers must cite the specific policy clause relied upon. A vague "not payable as per policy terms" is insufficient — write back demanding the exact clause number and the factual or medical basis.

Step 2 — File with the insurer's Grievance Redressal Officer

Every insurer must have a GRO with contact details published on the IRDAI website. Submit a written complaint with your policy copy, rejection letter and supporting documents. The insurer has 30 days to respond. File by email to preserve a timestamped trail.

Step 3 — Escalate to IRDAI through Bima Bharosa

If there is no response within 30 days or the response is unsatisfactory, register at bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in. IRDAI monitors insurer turnaround times through this system. Helpline: 155255 or 1800-4254-732.

Step 4 — Approach the Insurance Ombudsman (free and binding)

The Insurance Ombudsman is a quasi-judicial body under the Insurance Ombudsman Rules 2017, with 17 offices across India. Key facts:

Documents required: complete policy copy; policies from the previous 48 months if rejected on pre-existing disease grounds; the repudiation or partial-settlement letter; your representation to the insurer; and all correspondence with the insurer and TPA. Find your jurisdiction at cioins.co.in.

Step 5 — Consumer Commission

For claims above ₹50 lakh, or if you reject the Ombudsman's award, the District, State or National Consumer Commission is the next forum depending on the amount. Using the Ombudsman route does not forfeit this right.

The Ombudsman cannot accept cases involving alleged fraud or criminal misconduct, complaints against agents rather than insurers, or claims where the insurer has not first been given 30 days to respond.

Claim Rejection Support Service — Coming Soon

We are building a service to help policyholders whose claims have been denied: reviewing the rejection letter against the policy wording, assessing whether the insurer's stated grounds actually hold, and helping assemble and file the Ombudsman complaint correctly. Consistent with the rest of this site, we take no commission from insurers and will never be paid by the company that rejected you.

CSR and ASR Together Tell the Full Story?

Most people only check CSR. But the Amount Settlement Ratio (ASR) is equally important for large covers: CSR = Did the insurer pay the claim? ASR = Did they pay the FULL amount? LIC's CSR is 98.35% — excellent. But ASR is 83%. This means on a ₹1Cr claim, LIC may settle ₹83L and dispute the rest. Axis Max Life: CSR 99.62%, ASR 96.37% — the strongest combination here.

LIC vs Private Insurers: The Premium Gap Is Hard to Justify?

LIC's Jeevan Amar is ₹14,200/year. ICICI Prudential's iProtect Smart Plus is ₹10,800/year for identical ₹1Cr cover. That is a ₹3,400/year difference — ₹1,02,000 over 30 years. Private insurers (HDFC Life, Axis Max, ICICI) now match or beat LIC on CSR. LIC offers no critical illness cover, no disability waiver, and no flexible payout on Jeevan Amar.

How Much Cover Do You Actually Need??

The most common mistake is underinsuring. Use this simple calculation: Rule of thumb: 10–15x your annual income in cover. ₹8L income → minimum ₹80L cover, ideally ₹1–1.2Cr. Add your outstanding loans (home loan, car loan) to the figure.
