What is Motor Insurance?

Motor insurance covers financial loss from damage to your vehicle (own-damage) and damage or injury caused to others (third-party). Third-party insurance is legally compulsory in India — driving without it is a criminal offence. Comprehensive insurance adds own-damage cover on top and is strongly recommended for any vehicle newer than 5–7 years. The right policy protects you from repair bills, theft, natural calamities, and legal liability.

Third-Party (TP) Cover
Covers damage you cause to other people, their vehicles, or property. Legally mandatory. Does NOT cover your own vehicle's damage.
Own Damage (OD) Cover
Covers repair or replacement costs for your own vehicle after an accident, fire, flood, theft, or natural calamity.
Comprehensive Cover
Combines Third-Party + Own Damage in one policy. Strongly recommended for vehicles under 7 years old.
IDV (Insured Declared Value)
The market value of your vehicle as agreed with the insurer. This is the maximum you will receive in a total loss or theft claim.
No Claim Bonus (NCB)
A discount of up to 50% on your Own Damage premium if you don't claim in the previous year. Accumulates over 5 claim-free years.
Zero Depreciation
In a standard claim, the insurer deducts depreciation on replaced parts. Zero dep removes this deduction — you receive the full part replacement cost.

Key Terms Explained

Voluntary Deductible
An amount you agree to pay yourself in any claim. Higher voluntary deductible = lower premium. Choose carefully — you must pay this before the insurer pays.
Compulsory Deductible
A fixed amount mandated by IRDAI that you must pay on every own-damage claim regardless of your policy. ₹1,000 for cars up to 1500cc.
NCB (No Claim Bonus)
Built up over claim-free years: 20% after Yr1, 25% Yr2, 35% Yr3, 45% Yr4, 50% Yr5+. Applies only to the OD component of premium.
Cashless Repair
You take your car to a network garage — the insurer pays the garage directly. You only pay the deductible and non-covered items.
Reinstatement Value
In total loss, IDV is what you receive. If you selected a lower IDV to save premium, you receive less than market value — a costly mistake.

What to Look For — Buyer's Advisory

Third-Party vs Comprehensive: What You Actually Need

Third-party insurance is legally required. But here is what it does NOT cover:

TP-only is legal minimum. Comprehensive is actual financial protection.

Zero Depreciation Cover: Almost Always Worth Buying

Here is how depreciation affects a standard claim without zero dep:

Buy zero depreciation cover for any car under 5 years old.

Your NCB Is Worth Protecting — Here's Exactly How Much

NCB accumulates year-over-year on your Own Damage premium. For a car with ₹8,000 OD premium:

A 50% NCB is worth ₹4,000+/year. Protect it with the NCB protect add-on.

IDV: The Number That Determines What You Get in a Total Loss

IDV is the current market value of your car as agreed in your policy. In case of theft or total damage, this is the maximum you receive.

Set IDV at the actual current market value of your car — not lower.

Engine Protection Cover: Essential in Flood-Prone Cities

Standard comprehensive plans do NOT cover engine damage from waterlogging. This matters most in:

Engine protection is a must-have in flood-prone cities. It costs less than ₹150/month.

NCB Belongs to You — Not the Car

This is one of the most commonly misunderstood facts in motor insurance:

Always get your NCB Certificate when selling a car. Transfer it to your next vehicle.

⚠️ Legal reminder: Driving without at least third-party motor insurance is a criminal offence under Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Penalty: fine up to ₹2,000 and/or up to 3 months imprisonment for first offence. ₹4,000 and/or 3 months for repeat offence. Comprehensive policies include third-party cover automatically.

Claim Rejection in India — The Statistics

Indian insurers registered 2,57,790 grievances on IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal in FY 2024-25, a 20% increase in a single year. Health and general insurance complaints rose almost 45%. About 69% of general insurance grievances concerned claims — delays, underpayments and rejections — amounting to roughly 1.22 lakh claim-related complaints.

The Council for Insurance Ombudsmen recorded 13,308 complaints against a single insurer in FY 2023-24, of which 10,196 related specifically to partial or complete claim rejection. A useful benchmark when comparing insurers: fewer than 20 complaints per 10,000 claims is considered healthy.

How to Avoid Getting Your Claim Rejected

  1. Disclose every medical condition honestly. Non-disclosure is the single largest cause of claim rejection in India. Insurers review hospital records, pharmacy history and past claims at claim time. If unsure whether something counts, declare it — a higher premium costs far less than a rejected claim.
  2. Never let an agent fill your proposal form. Agents are paid on the sale, not on your claim. If they mark "no" against medical history to push the policy through, you carry the consequence.
  3. Read the Customer Information Sheet. IRDAI requires a plain-language CIS with every policy covering inclusions, exclusions, waiting periods, deductibles and grievance procedure.
  4. Know your waiting periods. Pre-existing conditions typically carry 2–4 year waiting periods; specific illnesses and maternity have separate timelines.
  5. Notify the insurer in time. Planned hospitalisation generally requires 48–72 hours prior intimation; emergencies within 24 hours of admission.
  6. Confirm the hospital is in-network before admission. Cashless treatment only works at network hospitals and lists change.
  7. Keep every document. Bills, prescriptions, diagnostic reports, discharge summaries and receipts. Missing documentation is the most common cause of partial settlement.
  8. Renew without a break. A lapsed policy resets waiting periods and forfeits accumulated no-claim benefits.

How to Challenge a Rejected Insurance Claim

A rejection is not final. The escalation process below is free and frequently succeeds.

Step 1 — Obtain the rejection in writing with specific reasons

Insurers must cite the specific policy clause relied upon. A vague "not payable as per policy terms" is insufficient — write back demanding the exact clause number and the factual or medical basis.

Step 2 — File with the insurer's Grievance Redressal Officer

Every insurer must have a GRO with contact details published on the IRDAI website. Submit a written complaint with your policy copy, rejection letter and supporting documents. The insurer has 30 days to respond. File by email to preserve a timestamped trail.

Step 3 — Escalate to IRDAI through Bima Bharosa

If there is no response within 30 days or the response is unsatisfactory, register at bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in. IRDAI monitors insurer turnaround times through this system. Helpline: 155255 or 1800-4254-732.

Step 4 — Approach the Insurance Ombudsman (free and binding)

The Insurance Ombudsman is a quasi-judicial body under the Insurance Ombudsman Rules 2017, with 17 offices across India. Key facts:

Documents required: complete policy copy; policies from the previous 48 months if rejected on pre-existing disease grounds; the repudiation or partial-settlement letter; your representation to the insurer; and all correspondence with the insurer and TPA. Find your jurisdiction at cioins.co.in.

Step 5 — Consumer Commission

For claims above ₹50 lakh, or if you reject the Ombudsman's award, the District, State or National Consumer Commission is the next forum depending on the amount. Using the Ombudsman route does not forfeit this right.

The Ombudsman cannot accept cases involving alleged fraud or criminal misconduct, complaints against agents rather than insurers, or claims where the insurer has not first been given 30 days to respond.

Claim Rejection Support Service — Coming Soon

We are building a service to help policyholders whose claims have been denied: reviewing the rejection letter against the policy wording, assessing whether the insurer's stated grounds actually hold, and helping assemble and file the Ombudsman complaint correctly. Consistent with the rest of this site, we take no commission from insurers and will never be paid by the company that rejected you.
